‘Welcome to Derry’: ‘It’ Prequel Series In the Works At HBO Max

Pennywise the clown fans get ready to head back to Derry! Variety confirmed today that HBO Max is developing a new series “Welcome to Derry“, which will be a prequel to ‘It‘. Which will begin in the 1960s and lead to the events of It: Chapter One the 2017 film based on the Stephen King‘s novel.

The Ankler was first to break the news about the upcoming series, which was later confirmed by sources at Variety. Director Andy Muschietti, who directed both parts of the latest adaptation is attached to executive produce, alongside with Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. According to sources, Welcome to Derry was developed by Muschietti and Fuchs, with the latter penning the script.

The new series is said to be an example of HBO Max using existing WB franchises to build fresh new series. The streamer has already announced a limited series where Colin Farrell is will reprise the role of The Penguin from The Batman.

In It: Chapter Two the adults returned 27 years after the events of the first to put an end to the shapeshifting creature named Pennywise. Now it looks as though we will head to Derry 27 years prior to their first encounter with the clown, to see what nightmares he was unleashing then.

There is no word yet if Bill Skarsgård, who played Pennywise in both 2017 and 2019, will reprise his role. Nor do we know when the tentatively titled series Welcome to Derry will be heading to HBO Max. So be sure to stay tuned to ScaryNerd and we will keep you updated as this story develops.
