Tony Todd confirms 2020 ‘Candyman’ involvement, says it will “put renewed attention on the original”

Tony Todd fans have long held him as one of the best monsters of 90s horror since his incarnation of Candyman. When it was announced that Jordan Peele would be remaking it for a new generation, fans eagerly waited to see if Todd would have any part in the upcoming remake. Horror fans seem to have embraced remakes and reboots. But they still want the latest versions to honor the original films. We all remember the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake that completely left Robert Englund out.

Todd himself had even expressed his disappointment at not being involved in the production. However, the new team behind the bee clad villain have finally contacted Todd about the upcoming production. Naturally very few details have been released about the new film. However, Todd himself has confirmed his involvement during a panel for Nickel City Con.

“Out of the blue I got a phone call from Jordan Peele. We’re still waiting for the contract, but the way he explained it to me was that it’s gonna be applause-worthy moments. That’s his words. No matter what happens with that, it’s gonna just put renewed attention on the original.”

“I think the fans are going to be happy.”

The new script is co-written and produced by Jordan Peele and directed by Nia DaCosta. The original Candyman franchise featured three films, all starring Todd as the hooked hand villain. Since Todd has been the only actor to portray the character, fans expected him to be involved in some capacity.

Even though Todd originally thought he would not be involved in the reboot, he was still excited about the new team at the helm. Earlier this year, Todd spoke with Forbes and he was hopeful.

“In [Candyman reboot producer] Jordan Peele’s case I really like what I’ve seen of his work so far,” Todd shared with Forbes. “I have full confidence in that remake being in competent hands and he and I have talked. I can’t say anything further than that, but I think the fans are going to be happy.”

The new Candyman will hit theaters on June 12, 2020. Be sure to leave us a comment below to let us know what you think. Follow ScaryNerd for more of all things horror!
