The Gate Keeper Returns! Sigourney Weaver Confirms Her Return as Dana Barrett for ‘Ghostbusters’ 3

When the news broke that Jason Reitman would be restoring the original timeline to the Ghostbusters franchise, fans everywhere rejoiced. Fans were hopeful that the original cast would be included in some way. The original 1984 film starred Sigourney Weaver, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and the late Harold Ramis.

The two time Oscar nominee and son of Ghostbusters (84) director Ivan Reitman, assured fans this would be a continuation. “This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day, ” said Reitman in a statement.

Now, it looks as though he is making good on that promise. In a recent profile for Parade, Sigourney Weaver confirmed that she will be reprising her role in the upcoming film. And she says that Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray will be joining her! “It’s going to be crazy working with the guys again!” she said. She wouldn’t reveal any details except to confirm she’s reprising her role as Dana Barrett.

In addition to confirming her involvement, Weaver also discussed how the franchise changed her career. “I knew it would be big,” she says, “the script was so funny and full of heart.” She played Dana/ gatekeeper in Ghostbusters and came back for the second installment. “Ghostbusters changed my life,”  she says. Both Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson had expressed their excitement for the upcoming film when it was announced. But now, Bill Murray has also stated that he’d be down to come back as well. While addressing why he came back for the reboot, Murray provided some hope on the matter when he said:

“I was in that movie just because they asked me, and I knew if I said no, I was saying I didn’t support that movie. I felt like, OK, I’m going to support them because I support them as people. So I did that one and I would do this next one.”

The Ghostbusters 35th anniversary fan event will take place in Southern CA this weekend. Director Jason Reitman will be in attendance and has said that he will have more details then. Hopefully that means full confirmation on all surviving cast members. But we’ll have to wait and see.
