‘Scary Stories’ Documentary Explores the Books’ Controversial Past

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the horror stories by Alvin Schwartz, have scared more than just children. In the trailer for the upcoming documentary, Scary Stories, we explore the long contentious history. Directed by Cody Meirick, the film has over 40 interviews with experts, artists, and fellow children’s author, R.L Stine. Also featured are interviews with relatives of the late Alvin Schwartz.

More than a few times the books were banned by school libraries. Often they were targeted for being ‘satanic’ or too dark for its targeted teen audience. Schwartz’s books will finally come to the big screen this summer with Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation, in theaters August 9. Ahead of that, fans can dive into the past and see the cultural effects these books left on American children.
