Sam Raimi Confirms He’ll Direct ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’
Earlier this year Scott Derrickson parted ways with the MCU over the production of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Derrickson was said to have left the film, which will be a sequel to the 2016 Doctor Strange film, due to creative differences.
Shortly after Derrickson’s exit, news broke that Sam Raimi was being eyed to helm the project. While all those rumors seemed to fizzle out, Raimi has nonchalantly confirmed his involvement via a phone interview with ComingSoon.net. During the interview Raimi began discussing his Spider-Man films, specifically a scene within Spider-Man 2, where J.K. Simmons makes a reference about the Doctor Strange name being taken.
“I loved Doctor Strange as a kid, but he was always after Spider-Man and Batman for me,” Raimi explained. “He was probably at number five for me of great comic book characters. He was so original, but when we had that moment in Spider-Man 2 I had no idea that we would ever be making a Doctor Strange movie, so it was really funny to me that coincidentally that line was in the movie. I gotta say I wish we had the foresight to know that I was going to be involved in the project.”
While there has been no official announcement from Marvel, Sam Raimi seems to have confirmed the news for us. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness will come to theaters November 5, 2021.
