‘Mindhunter’ Season 1: Things to Remember Before Bingeing Season 2

Netflix’s hit series “Mindhunter” released its second season today. Which has been a long time coming for fans of the show. The first season debuted way back in 2017. So it’s been quite awhile for those who haven’t found time to re-binge the true crime drama. But never fear, ScaryNerd is here to give you the refresher that you need before diving into your season 2 binge fest.

The Agents

Netflix

In season one the audience met FBI agent Holden Ford  (Jonathan Groff) as he and fellow Agent Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), and psychology professor Dr. Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), team up to study the behavior of infamous serial killers. The series starts off in 1977, a time when there was very little understanding of serial killers and their psychology. The team recognizes how valuable the information could be, and they begin to establish the Behavioral Science Unit.

The Interviews

Netflix

When we first meet Holden and Bill, they are traveling to different precincts across the country to teach local cops more about criminal behavior. Holden eventually becomes aware that one of their teaching jobs is near the prison where Charles Manson is serving his time. After discussing his interest of interviewing Manson with local police, they direct him to speak with coed killer Edmund Kemper (Cameron Britton) instead. Kemper’s willingness to discuss his behavior and understanding of his own psyche become a starting point for studying serial killer behavior. With the help of Dr. Carr’s academic methodology the team is able to implement a scientific approach to their study.

The season ends with the stress of the job getting to Holden, and we see him struggle personally and professionally. His relationship with his girlfriend has broken down, and now he has a growing pile of unanswered letters from Ed Kemper. He eventually is forced to fly out to see Kemper after receiving a call that Ed has tried to commit suicide. They share a tense conversation before Kemper envelops Holden into a bear hug. After leaving the room Holden collapses and ends the season with a full blown panic attack.
