Grab Your Flu Buddy, Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’ Ordered At CBS All Access

It may have taken a long time but The Stand is finally getting a reboot! Fans of the 1978 novel haven’t seen an update of the story since 1994. The TV miniseries starred Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald. Over the past decade we have seen many of our beloved horror films and shows remade. However, it seems that Hollywood is finally getting around to updating projects that actually NEED to be refashioned for a new audience. The Stand is one of those projects that has long needed a new take on the beloved story.

The story follows a group of survivors of a super flu, called Captain Trips, that decimates the population. While the US government is clearly at fault, it soon becomes clear that there is a darker force behind the outbreak. The survivors end up in a battle of good vs evil, in this story of death, destruction and human endurance.

Five Years in the Making

It has been a long road for Josh Boone and Ben Cavell who co-wrote the screenplay for the new project. Boone who is set to direct had this to say about finally getting to adapt this story:

“I read The Stand under my bed when I was 12, and my Baptist parents burned it in our fireplace upon discovery, said Boone. “Incensed, I stole my Dad’s FedEx account number and mailed King a letter professing my love for his work. Several weeks later, I came home to find a box had arrived from Maine, and inside were several books, each inscribed with a beautiful note from god himself, who encouraged me in my writing and thanked me for being a fan. My parents, genuinely moved by King’s kindness and generosity, lifted the ban on his books that very day. I wrote King a cameo as himself in my first film and have been working to bring The Stand to the screen for five years. I’ve found incredible partners in CBS All Access and Ben Cavell. Together with Stephen King, Owen King, my longtime producing partners Knate Lee and Jill Killington, we plan to bring you the ultimate version of King’s masterwork.”

The new adaptation will be a limited series of 10 episodes for CBS All-Access. Though fans are excited to see the story come back to life, Boone will have big shoes to fill. The 1994 TV miniseries, which was written by King himself is still a fan favorite today. When asked about the update King had this to say:

“I’m excited and so very pleased that The Stand is going to have a new life on this exciting new platform,” King said in a statement. “The people involved are men and women who know exactly what they’re doing; the scripts are dynamite. The result bids to be something memorable and thrilling. I believe it will take viewers away to a world they hope will never happen.”
