Cloverfield

‘Cloverfield’ Sequel Coming From Writer of ‘The Ritual’ Joe Barton

The alien found footage film Cloverfield began as a survival tale of a group of people from New York. However, over the years fans of the creature feature have gotten to see a much larger story as sequels revealed a shared universe. Now that shared story is getting even bigger. Sources for THR have discovered that there is another Cloverfield in the works from writer Joe Barton (The Ritual).

J. J. Abrams-produced the original 2008 hit under his Bad Robot banner. Abrams and Paramount are re-teaming for this new installment and the film will not be in the found footage format.

The first film in the franchise was made for $25 million, and went on to gross $172 million worldwide. The next two films, 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox, were originally developed as separate movies. However, their stories were tied into the Cloverfield story and ultimately linked into the first film.

However, Paradox failed to garner the same results as the first two films in the franchise. Fans and critics thought that was the end for the mysterious alien that first terrorized New York City. Luckily for fans, Abrams and Barton have found more story to tell. Writer Joe Barton is most well known for his Netflix film The Ritual, which focuses on a group of friends who find out that a short cut is never the smartest way home. Up next for Barton is The Invasion, which is currently in post-production. The film stars Riz Ahmed and Octavia Spencer and will eventually be heading to Amazon.
