2019 and The Return of Big Budget Horror

Although 2019 is just getting started, the horror lineup for this year already looks promising. This year’s list of upcoming films include some twisted new tales, and some long awaited remakes of classic Stephen King stories. The horror genre has gone through some changes over the last few years. However, it looks like the studios have finally gotten the message that horror sells. So let’s all celebrate, what we hope is the end of the ‘found footage’ era!

One thing is for sure, 2019 will give us plenty of chills, and hopefully some wonderfully gory moments. Lets take a look at some of the new films that are sure to get horror fans ready to line up at the box office.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile

Serial killer Ted Bundy murdered over 30 women and girls in the ’70s. This biography/thriller will be told from the perspective of his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer, played by Lilly Collins.  Zac Efron, will play the infamous Bundy. Also starring John Malkovich, Jim Parsons and Kaya Scodelario, this film will debut at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26th.

Little Monsters

A washed-up musician is forced to team up with a teacher, and a kids show host to protect school children from a sudden outbreak of zombies. The film stars Lupita Nyong’o, Josh Gad and Alexander England (Alien: Covenant) this comedy/horror promises to be fun ride. Little Monsters will debut at Sundance on January 27th.

The Prodigy

This year will also give us yet another reason, to be afraid of creepy children.  Starring Taylor Schilling, as a mother raising a son, played by Jackson Robert Scott (Georgie, IT) who starts to show signs of demonic possession. Also starring Brittany Allen this film hits theaters on February 8th.

Us

Jordan Peele made his debut into the horror genre in 2017 with Get Out. With Peele again writing and directing, the film stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Lupita Nyong’o , Winston Duke and Elisabeth Moss. The film follows a family of four on vacation with some friends at their beach house. But their relaxation soon ends when unexpected visitors arrive. Its set to premiere at the South by Southwest film festival (SXSW) on March 8, and will be in theaters March 22nd.

Pet Sematary

The highly anticipated remake of the Stephen King novel will follow the Creed family, and their journey into darkness. Louis Creed, and his family move to a rural home where they befriend their neighbor. Soon after they arrive, they are shown an eerie ‘Pet Sematary’ located near their home. After learning of the power of the land, Louis finds out the hard way that sometimes dead is better.

Starring Jason Clarke, John Lithgow and Amy Seimetz, this film will arrive in theaters on April 5th.

The Curse of La Llorona

This film is the first big budget take on the Mexican urban legend of The Weeping Woman. Set in 1970s Los Angeles, a social worker ignores the warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment. She and her children are soon drawn into a supernatural nightmare. Starring Linda Cardellini, Patricia Velasquez and Raymond Cruz, The Curse of La Llorona hits theaters on April 19th. 

The New Mutants

This Marvel X-Men story is about five teenage mutants, just discovering their powers, held at a secret facility against their will. They now must fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.

The cast is littered with familiar faces including Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), and Antonio Banderas. This sci-fi/horror mashup hits theaters August 2nd.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

Guillermo del Toro is producing Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. This film tells the tale of a group of teenagers who are going to solve the mystery surrounding sudden deaths in their small town. Details on the script are still mostly under wraps. Directed by André Øvredal, this adaptation is scheduled to be in theaters August 9th.

IT: Chapter Two

Finally, we’ll all float back to Derry for the sequel to It: Chapter One, which hit theaters in 2017. Bill Skarsgard will be back as the deranged entity Pennywise. Set 27 years after the childhood version of the Losers Club defeated the clown. They now have grown up and moved away from the small town, but when strange things start happening again the group must come back and face Pennywise yet again. Stepping into the adult versions of the group are James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, Jay Ryan, James Ransone, Isaiah Mustafa and Andy Bean.

Pennywise and the Losers Club will be back in theaters September 6th.
