‘Voluntary Committal’ New Series Based on Novella By Joe Hill in Development

Paramount TV Studios is developing Voluntary Committal, a psychological supernatural thriller series based on the novella by Locke & Key and NOS4A2 author Joe Hill. Sources for Deadline say that the project hails from Hill, writer Brad Caleb Kane (Warrior), Bob Cooper (Medical Investigation, Mr. Woodcock) with Landscape Entertainment.

The series is written by Kane, and based on the story from Hill’s 20th Century Ghosts collection. Voluntary Committal is centered on Nolan Lerner, who is on a quest to discover the truth about his autistic brother’s disappearance. Which Nolan feels has a potential connection to a dark secret from their past. Nolan’s investigation begins to reveal that he isn’t the only person in town hiding a secret. Is it possible that there’s a darker undercurrent to this town? Does it have something to do with the decades of missing persons?

Deadline says that the Voluntary Committal series “will explore the stories of Nolan’s investigation as an adult and that of his teenage years with his autistic brother, Morris, who had an extraordinary ability to build elaborate mazes large enough for people to walk into; although people didn’t always walk out. The interweaving stories throughout the two timelines will constantly inform one another, with the story of Nolan’s past eventually providing answers that launch the remainder of the series set in the present.”

Hill released 20th Century Ghosts as a collection of short stories in 2005. Previously, his other stories NOS4A2 and Lock & Key have also been adapted for television. The latter of which has been renewed for a third season on Netflix. Be sure to follow ScaryNerd and we will keep you updated as this story develops.
