Last September, New Line won the bidding war to bring an American version of Train to Busan to U.S. audiences. After securing the rights, New Line announced that Gary Dauberman and The Conjuring master, James Wan would be developing the project.
Over the past few years Gary Dauberman has been very busy in the world of horror. His horror writing credits include the first two Annabelle films, both chapters of IT, The Nun and his latest project was writing/directing Annabelle Comes Home. Even though he has established himself within the genre, he is still aware of the pressure of remaking the 2016 Korean zombie movie Train to Busan. Dauberman recently spoke with EW about his fears about adapting the American version.
“My rule is, Don’t f— it up!”
“Well, you know, the f—ing movie’s amazing, right? So, I’m being very careful how we translate it over here. And really my rule is, Don’t f— it up! Because there’s not a lot of places in the [original film] where you go, Oh, well, they did that completely wrong. I just don’t want to f— it up and I want to be respectful of a movie that I very very much love. So, that’s something that I’ve been excited to be working on.”

There is no word yet about when production will officially begin, but Dauberman says they are in process of developing the film. “Over [the holidays], while we were down from Annabelle Comes Home, I started to break it down and all that stuff,” says Dauberman. “It’s been slow going, because I’ve been working on this. I don’t know what they have in mind in terms of when they would shoot that or anything like that.”
Since its release in 2016, Train to Busan has become a fan favorite of the zombie horror sub-genre. Directed by Yeon Sang-ho, the film follows a father and daughter as they travel on a train through a zombie apocalypse. You can check out the trailer for the original Train to Busan below.
