‘The LaLaurie Mansion’: ‘The Conjuring’ Creators To Start New Horror Franchise Off with ‘Saw’ Director

The Conjuring creators Chad and Carey Hayes and producers Faster Horse Pictures (The Tax Collector) have set Saw franchise director, Darren Lynn Bousman to direct their newest horror franchise, The LaLaurie Mansion. Sources for Deadline confirmed that Bousman, who has directed four of the Saw movies including this year’s Spiral with Chris Rock and Samuel L Jackson, will direct the leadoff film in the proposed series of movies about the dark history surrounding the New Orleans property.

We first told you about this project two years ago when the Hayes Brothers first partnered with Faster Horse Picture. The brothers actually wrote the screenplay while on the property, and the production head to back to the location to shoot portions of the film on-site as well.

The infamous The LaLaurie Mansion has been closed to the public since 1932. The house was made infamous by New Orleans socialite and serial killer, Madame Lalaurie. She was responsible for the torturing and murder of numerous slaves on the mansion property in the early 1800s. She fled the city after a house fire revealed her crimes in 1834 and was never caught. Most recently LaLaurie was portrayed by Kathy Bates in American Horror Story: Coven.

Naturally, The LaLaurie Mansion has changed hands several times over the years, including actor Nicolas Cage, but is now owned by Michael Whalen, who is providing access for the film. The story will reportedly be told in multiple installments, like The Conjuring franchise, and cover events in the past into the present.

Bousman who’s Spiral recently opened No. 1 in the U.S., said in a statement: “Joining this project is a dream come true for me. For as long as I can remember I have been obsessed with the paranormal. Anyone who studies the supernatural knows the legends and lore of the LaLaurie Mansion. It’s the holy grail of these types of environments.

Recently I was allowed access to the house, and was able to stay there with the Hayes brothers. There is no way to articulate my 72 hours inside those walls. The house consumes you. Its history cripples you. The Hayes Brothers have crafted such an emotional, suspenseful, and scary narrative that I cannot wait to introduce the world to this unbelievable location.”

“Not only is Darren an incredibly creative director, but he also knows how to build a franchise. We are beyond thrilled to have him on this one, and can’t wait to see what he brings to the screen,” added the Hayes Brothers.

Casting is now underway for The LaLaurie Mansion with the film release sometime late in 2021. Be sure to stay tuned to ScaryNerd for more of all things horror, sci-fi and more.

  1. I can’t wait!!! I love The Conjuring movies and the fact that they are based off of real life happenings. They have just gotten better and better. I watched The Coven season of AHS and was intrigued by how well Kathy Bates did in her role. I can’t wait to see what this new one brings to the table.

  2. Well spiral absolutely sucked. I hope this direction doesn’t ruin the conjuring universe, by making a sucky movie.

  3. interesting place , been in the house before.. it is so beautiful… use to see nick cage all the time in the quarter… i lived about 8 blocks from there… great times
