SXSW Satire ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies’ is a Hilarious Whodunnit Slasher from A24
We watched the new satirical horror film from A24, Bodies Bodies Bodies, at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. The film was directed by Halina Reijn (Instinct) with a script penned by Kristen Roupenian, Sarah DeLappe, and Chloe Okuno. Bodies Bodies Bodies stars Amandla Stenberg (The Hunger Games), Maria Bakalova (The Bubble) , Myha’la Herrold (“Plan B”), Chase Sui Wonders (Daniel Isn’t Real), Rachel Sennott (“Call Your Mother”), with Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Pete Davidson (The Suicide Squad). The studio is planning a theatrical release with the film opening on August 5.
When a group of rich 20-somethings plan a hurricane party at a remote family mansion, a party game turns deadly in this fresh and funny look at backstabbing, fake friends, and one party gone very, very wrong. Recently out of rehab Sophie (Stenberg), with her new girlfriend Bee (Bakalova) in tow, crash the hurricane mansion party with her estranged friends. Once the hurricane starts they decide to play a game, Bodies, bodies, bodies.
The object of the game is to turn off the lights and the person who picked the “killer” card must tap someone on the shoulder and they are now dead. When the power goes out and one of the friends ends up actually dead, this group of entitled 20 somethings enter into a dumb dumb whodunnit, with everyone being a suspect. As the film progresses, and bodies start to pile up, the remaining characters increasingly take the gloves off as accusations fly and secrets get spilled.

What follows is a satirical look at rich kids with no sense of purpose in life, and no idea how easily their so-called friendships can unravel at the slightest hint of trouble. This film is a fun ride full of some slightly gory good kills and plenty of comedic moments to get you through to the end. Pete Davidson plays a very funny coked out rich brat, as does the rest of the cast, and there is no shortage of finger pointing at one another.
This film played before a packed house at the Paramount Theater for this years South by Southwest (SXSW) and I can safely tell you the crowd was rolling with laughter. The strongpoint of the film is the ridiculousness of each characters actions, their own pity and self righteousness. It’s definitely a fun ride you won’t want to miss.
