Stephen King's 'The Dark Half' Getting the Remake Treatment from 'Her Smell' Director
Director Alex Ross Perry is set to helm the remake of Stephen King’s The Dark Half per Deadline. The 1989 bestseller was based on King’s own real life experiences. As the author was publicly outed in 1985 as writing under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. In 1993 MGM brought the story to the big screen from director George Romero and starring Timothy Hutton.
King began using his pseudonym because his publishers were worried he would flood the fiction market. But a book store clerk eventually figured it out and King came clean.
Similarly, The Dark Half follows author Thad Beaumont, who’s pseudonym, George Stark is about to be exposed. After Beaumont reveals the secret himself, Stark comes to life. George Stark begins hunting those he holds responsible for ending him. The police begin to suspect Beaumont for the violent deaths. The author must now battle his own inner demons to save his family and himself.

Now MGM has handed the story to Alex Ross Perry, who will adapt and direct The Dark Half. The director first made waves during the 2018 Toronto Film Festival. Perry wrote, produced and directed Her Smell, starring Elisabeth Moss.
There has been a resurgence in the demand for updating some of King’s work over the last decade. Now, another director will get a chance to retell the story of what happens when your darker alter ego materializes.
