Stephen King to celebrate 25th anniversary of The Stand with rare podcast appearance
Finally we will get to hear Stephen King discuss one of his classic tv miniseries. Last week EW revealed that Stephen King will be making a rare appearance on director Mick Garris’ Post Mortem podcast. The appearance will mark the 25th anniversary of The Stand miniseries. Based on King’s epic 1978 novel about a deadly flu virus (Captain Trips) that wipes out nearly everyone it infects. The survivors are now caught in the aftermath of the super-flu and in a battle of good vs evil.
The cast included Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe, Miguel Ferrer, Ed Harris, Adam Storke, Matt Frewer, Laura San Giacomo, Ruby Dee, and Jamey Sheridan. Garris directed the 1994 ABC series, and King wrote the screenplay. In January, it was announced that a new limited series of The Stand headed back to our televisions. This time the adaptation is headed for the streaming service, CBS All Access.
“I almost left it in a drawer”
On the episode of Post Mortem, King is said to reveal that he almost didn’t finish The Stand. “I said, ‘This is getting too big, this is unwieldy,’” King says. “I almost ended the book right there, I almost left it in a drawer, because I said, ‘I don’t know what to do with all these people, I’ve spread the thing too wide.’”
Garris and King have collaborated on many other television and film adaptations. The pair also teamed up for the 1992 feature length film adaptation of Sleepwalkers. They would collaborate again on the 1997 miniseries version of The Shining, and Bag of Bones in 2011. Garris also helmed a segment for the upcoming horror anthology film Nightmare Cinema out June 21st.
The King featured episode of Post Mortem will be available for audiences on the Fangoria Podcast Network on May 8. Which is the 25th anniversary of when The Stand miniseries premiered on televisions.
