ScaryNerd’s Summer 2019 Horror Movie Guide

Summer is almost here and this year that means lots of new movies for horror fans! New originals, reboots, and new adaptations await over the next few months. But don’t worry we have your guide to all the new creepy and crawly films making their way to theaters this summer.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile 

Netflix

Serial killer Ted Bundy murdered over 30 women and girls in the ’70s. This biography/thriller will be told from the perspective of his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer, played by Lilly Collins. Zac Efron plays the infamous Bundy, with John Malkovich, Jim Parsons and Kaya Scodelario also attached. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile will stream on Netflix on May 3rd. The Intruder

Scott and Annie Russell couldn’t be happier after buying their dream home from a mysterious and lonely widower named Charlie in Napa Valley, Calif. Their newfound paradise soon turns into a living nightmare when Charlie — still strangely attached to the house — begins to show up and interfere in their daily lives. When his erratic behavior turns to obsession, the young couple soon find themselves caught up in a violent confrontation that threatens to destroy everything they hold dear. This new horror/ thriller stars Michael Ealy, Meagan Good, and Dennis Quaid. Watch the trailer below, The Intruder comes to theaters in the U.S. May 3rd.


The Perfection

Troubled musical prodigy Charlotte (Allison Williams) seeks out Elizabeth (Logan Browning), the new star pupil of her former school. But things take a dark turn and the encounter sends both musicians down a sinister path with shocking consequences. The Perfection will be available to stream on Netflix May 24th.


Brightburn

What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror. Starring  Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, and Matt Jones, Brightburn comes to theaters on May 24th.


Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Members of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species-thought to be mere myths-rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance. Starring Charles Dance, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown and many more, this creature feature stomps its way to theaters May 31.


Ma

Universal Pictures

A lonely, middle-aged woman befriends a group of teenagers and decides to let them party at her house. Just when the kids think their luck couldn’t get any better, things start happening that make them question the intention of their host. Starring Octavia Spencer, Ma comes to theaters May 31.


The Dead Don’t Die

The citizens of the sleepy little town of Centerville find themselves under attack by flesh-eating zombies when the dead rise from their graves. With the greatest zombie cast ever disassembled starring Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Chloë Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, Caleb Landry Jones, Rosie Perez, Iggy Pop, Sara Driver, RZA, Selena Gomez, Carol Kane, Austin Butler, Luka Sabbat and Tom Waits. Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, The Dead Don’t Die comes to theaters June 14th.


Child’s Play

Fandango

The new Child’s Play will finally be hitting our screens this summer. But, he’s got a new look, new tech and a new voice. Aubrey Plaza, stars as a single mother, who just wants to give her kid a new present. When her young son Andy (Gabriel Batemaner) discovers there is something wrong with the doll, they both must fight for their lives, when sinister Buddi doll (voiced by Mark Hamill), takes on a life of its own. Child’s Play will slash its way to theaters June 21st.


Annabelle Comes Home

Determined to keep Annabelle from wreaking more havoc, demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren bring the possessed doll to the locked artifacts room in their home, placing her “safely” behind sacred glass and enlisting a priest’s holy blessing. But an unholy night of horror awaits as Annabelle awakens the evil spirits in the room, who all set their sights on a new target-the Warrens’ ten-year-old daughter, Judy, and her friends. Annabelle Comes Home to theaters on June 28th.


Midsommar

A couple travel to Sweden to visit their friend’s rural hometown for its fabled midsummer festival, but what begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult. Starring Florence Pugh, Will Poulter, Jack Reynor and written and directed by Ari Aster (Hereditary), Midsommar will be in theaters July 3rd.


Crawl

Kaya Scodelario, stars as a young woman, attempting to save her father during a Category 5 hurricane. She soon finds herself trapped in a flooding house and must fight for her life against alligators. Also starring Barry Pepper, and Ross Anderson, Crawl hits theaters July 12th.


Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

The 9th Film from Quentin Tarantino, takes us to 1969 Los Angeles, set amid the time of the infamous Manson Family murders. Where television star Rick Dalton and his longtime stunt double make their way around a changing industry that they hardly recognize anymore. Starring  Margot Robbie, Timothy Olyphant, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood comes to theaters July 26th. While this film is officially listed as a drama, Tarantino always give horror fans a nod.


Brahms: The Boy II

After a family moves into the Heelshire Mansion, their young son soon makes friends with a life-like doll called Brahms. A sequel to 2016’s The Boy, Katie Holmes stars in Brahms: The Boy II, which creeps into theaters July 26th.


New Mutants

Magik, Wolfsbane and other teenage mutants try to come to grips with their superpowers while being held at a secret facility. The five young mutants, must now fight to escape their past sins and save themselves. New Mutants stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Alice Braga, Charlie Heaton and many more. New Mutants will be released on August 2nd in theaters.


Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

The shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large in the small town of Mill Valley for generations. It’s in a mansion that young Sarah Bellows turns her tortured life and horrible secrets into a series of scary stories. These terrifying tales soon have a way of becoming all too real for a group of unsuspecting teens who stumble upon Sarah’s spooky home. Starring Zoe Margaret Colletti, Michael Garza, Austin Zajur and so many more Scary Stories will hit theaters August 9th.


47 Meters Down Uncaged

This sequel to 2017’s 47 Meters Down, tells the story of four teens diving in a ruined underwater city. They quickly find themselves in a watery hell as their adventure turns to horror when they learn they are not alone in the submerged caves. As they swim deeper into the claustrophobic labyrinth of caves they enter the territory of the deadliest shark species in the ocean. Starring  John Corbett, Sophie Nélisse, and Nia Long, this film is scheduled to be released on August 16th.


There looks to be plenty to entertain all types of horror fans this summer. It seems that Hollywood has finally discovered the box office draw of horror films, and new age creature features. So stay tuned and be sure to follow ScaryNerd for all things horror!
