To Your Last Death

Review: ‘To Your Last Death’ is a Blood Soaked Sci-fi Fantasy

To Your Last Death is an animated blood bath that features the elements of sci-fi, fantasy, horror and more. Directed by Jason Axinn and featuring the star studded voice talents of Morena Baccarin (Deadpool), Ray Wise (“Twin Peaks“), Dani Lennon (The Love Witch), Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects), and William Shatner (“Star Trek“).

To Your Last Death focuses on Miriam (Dani Lennon) and her three siblings as they are summoned by their evil wealthy estranged father Cyrus (Ray Wise) to inform them he is dying. Under the pretense that he is about to name an executor to his vast fortune, they all reluctantly agree to meet him in his corporate headquarters.

Once they are all together his true intentions become clear, he plans to murder them all. With the aid of hired henchmen he sets out to torture them to death in a manner fitting their own words against him. In the end Miriam, the lone survivor, becomes the prime suspect of the brutal murders herself.

Due to strange cosmic circumstances Miriam is given the opportunity to relive the whole ordeal over again. But with the added bonus of having the knowledge of what is about to happen to her and her siblings. After realizing that reliving the events is the only way to save everyone, the real fun begins. She then becomes hell bent on revenge and saving her siblings. However, she discovers that the cosmic forces at play have other plans of their own.

This film works wonderfully in animated form, it allows all the fun and ridiculousness of the brutal kills to take center stage. The cosmic interference, along with the independent wills of her siblings, all add to the chaos filled battle with their father. Cyrus manages to literally take what his children have said against him and created their own ways of demise in Saw like contraptions. What truly makes this film so enjoyable is the brutal kills and the cosmic interference, that keeps viewers wondering what will happen next.

The hired henchman are comedically over the top in their enjoyment of their job and provide lots of laughs throughout. As for the cosmic forces not only watching the events, but gambling on them as well, they keep things interesting along the way. One of the few rules Miriam was given is that she had to keep things amusing for those watching. This stipulation comes into play more than once in Miriam’s second attempt at surviving the night.

Overall, To Your Last Death is a fun, gory good time with plenty to keep you amused throughout. Fans of Adult Swim or the animated series Archer will appreciate the campy, gory, good animated fun to be had with this film. Horror fans will enjoy this film for the slasherness and comedic nature of the film. 4/5

Rating: 4 out of 5.
