Reboot of Stephen King’s ‘Firestarter’ Casts Zac Efron

Zac Efron has boarded Universal/Blumhouse reboot of the Stephen King classic Firestarter. According to sources for Deadline, Efron has officially joined the film which will be directed by Keith Thomas (The Vigil).

The script is being adapted by writer Scott Teems (Halloween Kills, Rectify), who is also attached as executive producer. Jason Blum and Akiva Goldsman are producing, previously they teamed to produce Paranormal Activity franchise. Martha De Laurentiis, who was an associate producer on the 1984 adaptation is also back to executive produce.

Based off the novel by Stephen King the original film starred a very young Drew Barrymore and David Keith as father and daughter.

Firestarter follows a young girl who develops pyrokinetic abilities, aka the ability use fire at her will. Her father attempts to keep her powers secret but things go awry when she is abducted by a secret government agency that wants to harness her powerful gift as a weapon.

You can currently find Efron in his successful docu-series Down to Earth now streaming on Netflix.
