Paramount’s ‘Pet Sematary’ Prequel Rounds Out Cast

A few months ago Lindsey Beer signed on to direct a new prequel film to the Stephen King story, Pet Sematary. Now, Deadline has revealed that the project has added two new cast members, Samantha Mathis and Henry Thomas. The bestselling Pet Sematary has previously been adapted in 1989, which was followed by a sequel in 1992, and was then re-adapted in 2019 for a new generation of horror fans.

Beer wrote the script based off Jeff Buhler’s (The Midnight Meat Train) draft of the story. This new story is said to “serve as an origin story to the Stephen King novel about a family that discovers a rather disturbing graveyard in the woods behind their home.”

The original novel follows a family who has just moved to a countryside Maine town, when the patriarch of the family becomes the local town doctor. After settling into their new home they discover a nearby “Pet Sematary” in which the local townspeople bury their beloved animals. But when tragedy strikes the family, a neighbor reveals that the land just beyond the graveyard holds dangerous secrets.

Beer will be the second female director to tackle the Pet Sematary story, the 1989 and 1992 films were both directed by Mary Lambert. Paramount Players has previously said it is committed to creating hit genre films from contemporary voices and properties.

Mathis and Thomas join the previously announced cast members Jackson White who will play a young Jud Crandall, Forrest Goodluck, Jack Mulhern, Natalie Alyn Lind, Isabella Star LeBlanc and Pam Grier. Production began just last week and the film will be debuting exclusively on Paramount+.
