New Details about Upcoming Child’s Play Remake

A remake of cult classic horror Child’s Play is in the works at MGM

Filming is set to start in about a month, and new details have begun to emerge. Per ComicBook.com, the film will feature a “defective ‘Buddy doll’ whose programming code was hacked so that he has no limitations to learning and also violence.” By a “Chinese factory worker who commits suicide shortly after re-programming a Buddy doll to have no limitations.” A stark contrast to the original film where a serial killer uses Voodoo to possess the doll and evade police. Early details suggested the film would be centered upon “Andy, a twelve-year-old boy, and his ragtag group of friends face off against a robot doll on a killing spree.”

It is still unclear whether the doll will resemble the original namesake in name or appearance. However, it doesn’t appear there will be much from any previous films in the franchise. We can only speculate why the worker would seek to alter the programming to begin with. The reasoning behind the suicide, is also up for debate. It does seem clear this film looks to go in a completely different direction from the original.

News of the new plot has not been received well from horror fans hoping to see new life pumped into the series. Original writer Don Mancini, producer David Kirschner and actor Brad Dourif are working on a TV series based on the film. Dourif has confirmed to have nothing to do with the remake, and has discussed future films as well. Mancini, who has written all the films also directed the last three films in the franchise. The timing essentially makes the film a rival to the TV series, and any future films Mancini may pen.
