New Blade Projects Reportedly in the Works at Marvel

The original Blade celebrated it’s twentieth anniversary last week. Before the massive Marvel and DC films, it all began with Blade. Blade is seen as the gateway that led to the X-Men and Spiderman franchises in the early 2000s. The films have a large fan following, although film critics gave less enthusiastic reviews. The box office success of the film helped bring the larger theatrical expansions of comic book universes to life. In a recent interview honoring the anniversary, Vice sat down with Wesley Snipes to discuss the film. During the interview Snipes confirmed that there are currently two Blade projects in the works.

Could Blade Fit into the MCU?

“There are a lot of conversations going around right now and we’re very blessed to have the enthusiasm and interest in something coming from that world again. We’ve created two projects that fit perfectly into this world and, when people see them, I think they’re only going to have a problem with deciding which one they love the most.”

In the past, Snipes stated that he would like to return to the character. Now it appears as though he is currently in talks with Marvel Studios. He remained vague about the projects, but stated that everyone is excited about it.

“All the main execs [at Marvel] and my team, we’ve been discussing for the past two years. Everyone’s enthusiastic about it, everybody gets it. But they got a business to run and they gotta square the things that they gotta figure out before they can get to it, I guess. In the meantime, we got a business to run and our own slate of things to do so…
But the next time you see something in [the Blade universe], mark my words: what we did before is child’s play compared to what we can do now.”

Do Fans Want a New Blade?

The first Blade (1998), brought in $131 million at box offices worldwide. With Guillermo Del Toro at the helm of Blade II, it performed better than the original, making $155 million. Blade: Trinity was a miss with fans and was the lowest performing, bringing in only $128 million. It has been fourteen years since Blade: Trinity opened in theaters. Fans of Snipes’  Blade, will undoubtedly be excited to see him return to the half human-half immortal character. Its still unclear in what form we will see Blade, but  there is still plenty of room in the MCU.
