Leigh Whannell is Giving ‘Upgrade’ a New Sequel Series for Blumhouse & NBCUniversal
Director Leigh Whannell is giving his horror- sci-fi film Upgrade a sequel series. Blumhouse Television and NBCUniversal will team up to bring the new series to life with Whannell set to return as director.
Per the press release obtained by Collider, the series “picks up a few years after the events of the film and broadens the universe with an evolved version of STEM and a new host – imaging a world in which the government repurposes STEM to help curb criminal activity.”

Whannell co-created the series and will also executive produce with showrunner Tim Walsh (Shooter). Helping to adapt the first season are writers Krystal Ziv Houghton and James Roland. Both previously wrote episodes for the USA series The Purge in its second season.
Upgrade starred Logan Marshall-Green and was written and directed by Leigh Whannell. The 2018 film followed Grey, played by Marshall-Green, a man who is on the hunt for justice after his wife is murdered in a mugging that leaves him paralyzed.
When a billionaire tech mogul seems to take pity on his situation, he offers Grey a computer implant called STEM. The device, which isn’t offered to the public, will give him a chance to walk again. However STEM also gives him extraordinary physical capabilities, which greatly assists Grey in his quest for vengeance. But it soon becomes clear that there is no telling where STEM ends and Grey begins.
There is no word for when the series will hit the small screen. For now you can check out Leigh Whannell’s most recent film The Invisible Man, which was just released on Blu-ray and DVD May 26. Be sure to follow ScaryNerd for more of all things horror.
