Joss Whedon’s HBO series ‘The Nevers’ finds its leading lady

The Nevers is sci-fi drama about a group of Victorian women who find they unusual abilities, and a mission that might change the world. The new series is co-written by Whedon and Buffy alums Jane Espenson and Doug Petri. Deadline recently reported that that Whedon has found his leading lady, actress Laura Donnelly (Outlander). Donnelly will take on the role of Amalia True, the most chaotic and damaged hero of her time. Who is a menace to stuffy Victorian life, and would die for the cause and kill for a drink.

Last summer, Whedon had this to say about the show:

“I honestly couldn’t be more excited. The Nevers is maybe the most ambitious narrative I’ve created, and I can’t imagine a better home for it than HBO. Not only are they the masters of cinematic long-form. But their instant understanding of my odd, intimate epic was as emotional as it was incisive. It’s been too long since I created an entirely new fictional world, and the HBO team offer not just scope and experience, not just ‘prestige,’ but a passionate collaboration.

“Laura Donnelly has charisma, wisdom and an anarchic precision that not only captures Amalia but defines her,” said Whedon. “She’s fierce and she’s funny – and I need both for the journey ahead.”

Hailing from Northern Ireland, Donnelly is best known her recurring role as Jenny Fraser in Starz’s Outlander. However, she is also an accomplished stage actress. Having won the 2018 Best Actress award at the Olivier Awards for her work on The Ferryman.

You can see Donnelly next in the Fox Searchlight feature Tolkien alongside Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins, due out May 10th.
