[Fantasia Film Festival 2022] Five Horror Movies We Can't Wait to See

Fantasia Film Festival 2022 begins this Thursday in Montreal, Quebec. Just announced for 2022 is a new section in the festival’s programming: SEPTENTRION SHADOWS, dedicated to showcasing Canadian cinema that captures the weird, the dangerous, things full of wonder, and (almost) everything in between.

Curated by programmer, critic and podcaster Carolyn Mauricette, the section will be launched this summer with the World Premiere of Rodrigo Gudiño’s The Breach. Here our five films we want to see at Fantasia Film Festival 2022.

THE BREACH

Rodrigo Gudiño, founder and president of Rue Morgue Magazine, will premiere his latest film The Breach. The film is an adaptation of Canadian horror author Nick Cutter’s novel, who co-wrote the screenplay with Ian Weir, tells of a mysterious and gruesome death in the forests of Northern Ontario and the chaos that follows. What’s more interesting is this film includes a score from the film’s Executive Producer, legendary Guns N’ Roses guitarist, Slash.

DARK GLASSES

In Dario Argento’s first film in a decade, Dark Glasses, a high end prostitute, Diana, is about to be a serial killers fourth victim, when she’s involved in a deadly accident. Now left blind she must navigate the world, with the help of an orphan boy Chin, and try to survive while the killer looks to finish what he started.

PIGGY

An awkward teenager’s uncomfortable existence of being picked on daily is thrown into ethical turmoil when a mysterious stranger begins to kill her bullies in Carlota Pereda’s horrific and acclaimed feature debut.

MEGALOMANIAC

A bold and striking provocation, Megalomaniac examines the tragic events that can turn man into monster and victim into executioner. Inspired by Belgium’s real-life Butcher of Mons, this violent, visual feast from Golden Méliès-winning writer/director Karim Ouelhaj is a powerful slice of cinema featuring unforgettable performances from its dedicated cast and establishing its boundary-pushing filmmaker as a truly global talent.

SWALLOWED

A favorite out of Overlook 2022, the latest shocker from Carter Smith (The Ruins) sees two old friends caught up in an overnight drug smuggling operation that is anything but normal. And when things go wrong, they must survive a horrific night in a backwoods hell of drugs, bugs, and obscene intimacy. This unforgettable Queer nightmare stars Jena Malone (The Ruins, The Hunger Games, Neon Demon), Mark Patton (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge), Cooper Koch (Blumhouse’s upcoming They/Them), and debuting talent Jose Colon.
