‘Are You Afraid Of The Dark?’ Reboot Finds Its Midnight Society

Deadline has exclusively released details for Nickelodeon’s reimagined version of iconic anthology series Are You Afraid of the Dark? Just to be clear, this is the limited series, not the film from Paramount that is also in the works.

The cast includes Sam Ashe Arnold (Best.Worst.Weekend.Ever.), Miya Cech (Rim of the World), Tamara Smart (Artemis Fowl, The Worst Witch), Jeremy Taylor (It, Goosebumps 2:Haunted Halloween), Lyliana Wray (Top Gun: Maverick, Black-ish), and Rafael Casal(Blindspotting).

The hourlong episodes are written by BenDavid Grabinski (Skiptrace) and directed by Dean Israelite (Power RangersProject Almanac). The new Midnight Society will tell a terrifying tale about the Carnival of Doom, only to have the story come to life.

Nickelodeon’s original Are You Afraid of the Dark? became a hit by exploring a new genre of kid-friendly horror. Created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel, the series aired on Nickelodeon from 1992 to 1996 and again from 1999-2000.

“Thought it best to part ways”

When the Are You Afraid of the Dark? revival was first announced is was to coincide with a film version from Paramount. However, the film has pushed back from its October schedule, due to behind the scenes changes.

Gary Dauberman was originally attached to pen the script. However, he recently confirmed to /Film that he is no longer attached. “That’s one of those things I’m no longer a part of, ” Dauberman said. “I just had a different vision to make it and thought it best to part ways.”

Even though the film version may have an uncertain future, the limited series is still set for its October release. We will keep you up to date as more details are released. Be sure to follow ScarNerd for more of all things horror!

  1. I vaguely remember this show being on and had no idea that it was coming back or that there was a movie in the works. Great way to introduce this show to a whole new generation even if it is only a short series. It should help with the film as well.

  2. I don’t really remember the show but I do know of people who still like it. I have heard the reboot discussed. it was nice knowing more about it.

  3. I remember this a while back. Either i am getting old or my memory is fading. Thanks for this wonderful write up and again to talk about the show and get ready for the film.

  4. I hadn’t heard of or thought about this series in years! I remember it (although not extremely well) from when I was a kid. I had no clue that a new series and film were being made. I’ll keep an eye out for that one.

  5. This was one of my favorite shows along with Goosebumps. Ahhh…old memories. I wanna watch it again! The film sounds exciting! 😍🎉

  6. I LOVED Are You Afraid of the Dark series when I was a kid! This is so cool that they are making a revival series! I remember my brother and I would watch it and then be terrified to go to bed (obviously we scare easily lol!) And I have a feeling my kids will be pretty excited to watch the revival! Great post!

  7. I do sort of recall this series, but never watched it. The movie sounds cool and I do like when they bring back old shows like a reunion or movie.

  8. My older kids loved Are You Afraid of the Dark. October is the perfect month for a short series like this with Halloween and all things spooky. I wonder how far the film will be pushed back.

  9. I would probably love to watch this movie. Horror appeals to me as a good change from the normal at times.
