Genre Bending ‘All of Us Are Dead’ Claws Its Way to No. 1 on Netflix

Since the early 2000s, South Korea has entered the conversation on zombies, the supernatural and other sub genres of horror. Netflix’ latest addition is All of Us Are Dead which just hit the streaming platform in late January. The series follows a group of high school students, who become trapped when a zombie virus is released and begins spreading.

This is the second time that a South Korean title has hit number one for Netflix. Squid Game, which examined the issues surrounding capitalism and classism through a series of ultra violent children’s games was the first to take over the platform. Now, South Korea has produced its second No. 1 series with All of Us Are Dead.

Based on the popular webtoon viewers follow the students of Hyosan High as they fight a zombie outbreak. While dealing with the hoard of hungry flesh eaters, they also have to navigate the human dynamics of high school, including jealousy, bullying and friendships.
