WiHM Spotlight | Marisol Ramirez : The Woman Behind la Llorona
Last year The Conjuring universe brought the popular Hispanic folktale, La Llorona, to the big screen. Marisol Ramirez brought “the weeping woman” to life in all her creepy glory. Since February is Women in Horror Month, we decided it was perfect timing to ask the woman behind the veil of La Llorona a few questions.
SN: Were you nervous to take on the role of such a well known figure in
Latin culture and folklore?
Marisol Ramirez: No I wasn’t nervous at all. I was very excited! I love horror, I love lore, and I always wanted to be in a scary movie playing the object of fear so it was like a dream come true. It was a very fun and powerful experience.
SN: Being a horror fan yourself, what does it mean to have played such a strong female character/villain, and now have young horror fans look
up to you?
It’s a wonderful feeling to think that people connected with the character of La Llorona in our movie and had a strong reaction to her. To me it means that we did our job well. It takes a lot of people to create that effect. Not just me as the actress, but also the make department, namely Gage Muster who created her look for the movie, as well as the costume designer Megan Spatz, the director Michael Chaves and the DP Michael Burgess. It’s a collaborative medium so it takes everyones’ artistry to achieve the final product.

Are there any Scream Queens or horror actors you’d like to make a movie with?
Oh yes! I love to work with Doug Jones! He is such a talented actor and a super sweet guy. I’d also love to work with Robert Patrick. Mega talented actor…. and he scares the life out of me! LOL!
Any chance we’ll see La Llorona pop up again in The Conjuring universe timeline?
I think we will! She is such an iconic character. And as you know…. you can never really kill La Llorona. She’s always there, lurking about.
What are you working on next?
I have a few projects which I am not allowed to speak about yet but when I am, you’ll be the first to know 🙂
For now you can catch Marisol Ramirez in The Curse of la Llorona currently streaming on HBOGo and HBO On Demand. Be sure to follow ScaryNerd for more of all things horror!
