Underrated Horrors: 5 Overlooked Horror Films to Stream Today
Disclaimer: Some of these Underrated Horrors are streaming on platforms that may require a paid subscription.
Horror fans spend countless hours weeding through On Demand/Streaming options for new films to watch. Sometimes films fall victim to poor marketing, i.e. bad movie poster/picture or the trailer fails to garner any excitement for the film. When this happens great films can slip through the cracks. Here are five films that we feel are underrated in the horror genre that are available to stream today.
The Devil’s Candy
By Demons Be Driven! The Devil’s Candy stars Ethan Embry (Disturbing Behavior, Empire Records), Shiri Appleby (Swimfan, Unreal) and Pruitt Taylor Vance (Bird Box, Stranger Things) in a story about murder, art and metal music. After moving his family into their dream home in rural Texas, a struggling painter begins blacking out. He soon realizes something much more sinister is happening when he begins painting haunting faces.
The three main stars of the film give great performances with Vance as a mentally unhinged man who just wants his house back. The music in the film plays an essential character as well, and you can’t really go wrong with Pantera and Metallica in a horror film. The Devil’s Candy is sure to treat horror fans to a good time and is steaming on Hulu.
Some Guy Who Kills People
Ken Boyd is a lonely man who is fresh out of a stint in the loony bin. He embarks on a mission of revenge to those who once bullied him mercilessly. Some Guy Who Kills People Stars Kevin Corrigan (The Exorcist III, Goodfellas) Barry Bostwick (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Karen Black (Invaders From Mars) and is definitely a horror comedy hidden gem.
There is plenty of sharp, witty dialogue between the characters and some good gory kills along the way. But as the bodies start to pile up the Sheriff, delivers a line in the film that we’d all like to say to our boss. “Either call in reinforcements, take my badge, or shut the fuck up!” Some Guy reminds the viewer a bit of campy 80s horror flicks with plenty of comedy mixed in and somewhat of a twist in the end. Some Guy Who Kills People is now streaming for free on TubiTV.

The Ritual
A group of college friends reunite after a devastating loss, for a trip to the Swedish wilderness, but encounter a menacing presence in the woods that’s stalking them. The Ritual stars Rafe Spall, Arsher Ali, Robert James-Collier and more.
This film shows you again why the shortcut is not always the best choice. Filmed in desolate forests of Romania, as the landscape of Northern Sweden, The Ritual is all about isolation and the unknown. This film is a bit of a slow burn but delivers on the gore and dread. The group stumbles into something sinister that plagues them while they sleep and drives them further into madness in the daytime. The bonds of friendship are truly tested when survival is on the line. You can find it currently streaming on Netflix.
One Cut of The Dead
One Cut of the Dead stars Takayuki Hamatsu, Yuzuki Akiyama, and Harumi Shuhama. The story follows a director (Hamatsu) and film crew as they film a low budget zombie movie. While filming at a WWII Japanese facility, real zombies show up and things go off the rails. The crew and actors must fight their way out to avoid being a snack.
The synopsis doesn’t quite capture the brilliance of this film and for good reason. If you haven’t seen this film, all I can tell you is that you will wonder what the hell everyone talking about for the first 30 minutes. After that the film will make a lot more sense. Plus that’s where the real charm of this movie begins to take shape. This film is very funny and will easily become one of your new favorite horror comedies.
Anyone who’s ever done low budget filmmaking will appreciate the way the film portrays the process, and the way in which this film was made itself. Watch this film twice, once to appreciate the funny film and again as a class in filmmaking. You will not be disappointed, One Cut of the Dead is now streaming on Shudder.
Frailty
Bill Paxton’s feature length directorial debut remains as the ultimate underrated hidden gem. A mysterious man shows up at the offices of an FBI agent to explain that his religious father was murdering people. However, his father believed he was receiving visions from God that these people were actually demons.
This film is dark, gritty and makes for an absolute fun time. Starring Paxton (Terminator, Aliens) himself, Matthew McConaughey (Reign of fire, Interstellar) and Powers Boothe (Tombstone, Sin City). Frailty is a must see for horror fans. Paxton does a great job at keeping the audience guessing and the story intriguing. This film was made to view multiple times in order to see all the clues along the way. It is a film that is simple yet very effective in the storytelling. Stephen King also called the movie the best horror that year. A must see for any fans of religious horror films and you can find it for free on TubiTV.
