The Year of Chucky: Your Guide to all the Upcoming ‘Child’s Play’ Projects
There’s a lot going in on the world of Child’s Play these days. This year will see MGM’s rebooted Child’s Play on the big screen. Fans will also get to see a TV series based on Chucky from the original team behind the 1988 hit. And let’s not forget the fan made film Charles also in the works. Let us help guide you through all that’s going on with everyone’s favorite pint sized slasher.
The Reboot
MGM owns the film rights and has thus decided it was time for a reboot. The original team behind Child’s Play, Don Mancini (Creator) David Kirschner (Producer) and Brad Dourif (Chucky) all have nothing to do with this incarnation of the beloved Good Guy doll.
Mancini has stated “They asked producer David Kirschner and I if we wanted to be executive producers. We said no thank you, because we have our ongoing thriving business with Chucky.”
While the first trailer has already arrived it’s still unclear as to the exact plot. But what is known is this updated Good Guy is a more technologically advanced doll than previously. Early reports were that a “defective ‘Buddy doll’ whose programming code was hacked so that he has no limitations to learning and also violence.” By a “Chinese factory worker who commits suicide shortly after re-programming a Buddy doll to have no limitations.” From what’s been released so far it does appear this to be the case. As far as the newly updated robotic doll is concerned. We’ll just have to wait and see how this version plays out with divided fans. Child’s Play will be released June 21, 2019.
The Continuation
With Universal retaining TV rights, they have partnered with the original team behind the doll. A Child’s Play TV series will come to the SyFy channel this year. According to Mancini “The show will be a fresh take on the franchise, allowing us to explore Chucky’s character with a depth that is uniquely afforded by the television series format, while staying true to the original vision that has terrorized audiences for over three decades now.”
It was recently announced creator of Channel Zero Nick Antosca will come on as Executive Producer also. Mancini has been involved with all Child’s Play films up to this point. “I’ve long wanted to bring Chucky to television and Syfy is the perfect network for us.”
As far as what direction the series will follow. “We deliberately ended Cult with a bunch of cliffhangers to set up a TV series.” “Because there are so many different threads now, television could best accommodate that so that was done intentionally. At the same time, we have a whole new world, a bunch of new characters which we can say nothing about.”
Fan Film
In addition to the new projects put forth by the owners and creators, there will also be a fan film debuting this year. Per IMDB Charles is about “a young couple moves in to their first apartment and encounters a red-headed freckled doll. Soon they discover that their home and doll reveal an evil presence.” This project was written and directed by Tony Bizz and will be out on May 10th. You can check out the teaser trail below.
