‘The Thing’: Blumhouse Remake will Give “Vital Backstory” to the Beloved Horror Tale
Yes, it’s true, Blumhouse and Universal are remaking The Thing. However, it isn’t as simple as it seems and here’s why. There have been many adaptations of the original novella, Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell Jr. Such as the 1951 film The Thing from Another World, John Carpenter’s The Thing (82) and its 2011 prequel The Thing. All the films gave fans frights with the horrors of a seclusion film and monsters aplenty.
The novella was first published in an issue of Astounding Science Fiction in 1938 and was thought to be the full work of the story. But in 2018 it was discovered that John W. Campbell Jr. had actually written a full length novel. John Betancourt, who created a Kickstarter to release the full novel entitled Frozen Hell, says that the novel “expands the story dramatically, giving vital backstory and context to an already incredible tale.”

This week, Betancourt and producer Alan Donnes revealed that Blumhouse and Universal Studios will be adapting Frozen Hell. Producer Alan Donnes officially broke the news via Facebook. “It’s OFFICIAL! I received my signed contract and first check! I am Executive Producing a remake of THE THING but with additional chapters of John Campbell’s groundbreaking novel, Frozen Hell, that had been lost for decades. Now, for the first time ever, Campbell’s full vision will be realized on the big screen. The new film will include the very best of RKO’s THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, John Carpenter’s classic THE THING and both books, Frozen Hell and Who Goes There?”
Betancourt expanded on Donnes statement saying, “He doesn’t say it, but movie will be from Universal and Blumhouse. Everyone is super excited about it, and it’s being fast-tracked. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what’s going on with Who Goes There?, Frozen Hell, and The Thing in Hollywood. I can’t talk about the rest yet, but it’s very exciting — and if all goes as planned, the Thing will be alive and well for quite a while.”
While Universal and Blumhouse have yet to make a statement, sources for Bloody Disgusting have confirmed the project is moving forward. Be sure to follow ScaryNerd and we’ll keep you updated as this story develops.
