If you have not watched the new Pet Sematary trailer yet or are waiting to see the big twist, stop reading! Look Away! Be gone with you!
Ok, now that you’ve been properly warned lets dive into the trailer. Fans of the book and the 1989 film got to see lots of their favorite moments come to life. But, we have to talk about the one BIG difference in the trailer. Ellie, not Gage, will be the undead child tormenting the Creed family. It seems many fans are on the fence about how they feel with the change. However, the filmmakers are here to explain themselves.
A New Direction
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura spoke with EW and had this to say about the decision: “Trust me, we were nervous about it, I feel this way about anything that you remake or update. If we gave you what you had before, we didn’t do the subject matter much good. I’m very protective of movies too, but I want a new experience each time, and feel like filmmakers have really thought about the choice. That was one, we thought, ‘All right, let’s make this choice.’”
The decision will undoubtedly be highly debated in the months to come. But di Bonaventura says that the change was more about practicality and will bring the story to another level.
“Gage is so young, you can’t really do that much with him,” di Bonaventura says. “So this way, we’re able to really get underneath our affected child. We’re able to get into the psychological horror of a child [coming back] because of her age.”
We will just have to wait and see if the new direction will give horror fans, and King’s readers a remake worthy of our time. Pet Sematary will hit theaters April 5th. Stay tuned for more updates!
