See Matt Smith as Charles Manson in New Trailer for ‘Charlie Says’

The former ‘Doctor Who’ star, Matt Smith, takes on the role of Charles Manson in the upcoming ‘Charlie Says.’ From the filmmakers that brought you ‘American Psycho,’ this film promises a different take on the notorious crimes. 

In their new film director Mary Harron and co-writer Guinevere Turner focus on three “Manson Family” women. The women were sentenced to death for the infamous 1969 murder case. The film originally debuted at the Venice Film Festival in 2018. However, now IFC has officially acquired the U.S. rights to the film. Therefore they have announced a limited theatrical release and VOD release on May 10th.

Based on the Karlene Faith nonfiction book The Long Prison Journey of Leslie van Houten: Life Beyond The Cult, and Ed Sanders’ 1971 novel, The Family. Now, fifty years since the prolific murders, there is a renewed interest in bringing films like Charlie Says’ to the big screen. Likewise, Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ and ‘The Haunting of Sharon Tate,’ will also make their debuts later this year.

The Women

“Years after the shocking murders that made the name Charles Manson synonymous with pure evil, the three women who killed for him—Leslie Van Houten (Murray), Patricia Krenwinkel (Bacon), and Susan Atkins (Rendón)—remain under the spell of the infamous cult leader (Smith). Confined to an isolated cellblock in a California penitentiary, the trio seem destined to live out the rest of their lives under the delusion that their crimes were part of a cosmic plan—until empathetic graduate student Karlene Faith (Wever) is enlisted to rehabilitate them. Convinced the prisoners are not the inhuman monsters the world believes them to be. Karlene begins the arduous process of breaking down the psychological barriers erected by Manson. Also joining Smith in the film is Merritt Wever (The Walking Dead) and Annabeth Gish (Haunting of Hill House). Stepping into the roles as family members are Chace Crawford, Sosie Bacon,Hannah Murray, and Marianne Rendon. The cast also includes Suki Waterhouse, Odessa Young, Carla Gugino, and Kaylie Carter.
