Review Creepshow Season 3 : A Strong Start to Shudder’s Latest Season of Comic-Book Horror

Creepshow Season 3

Shudder

Creepshow is back for its third season, and it couldn’t get here soon enough for me. Premiering September 23rd on the Shudder streaming service, we’re dropped back into the EC Comics (Entertaining Comics) inspired world of this nightmarish series. The show picks up right where it left off with two horrific tales destined to get you back into the Halloween spirit with Mums & Queen Bee.

For those of you who unaware of the origins of Creepshow, it is an anthology-based series executive produced by renowned effects artist Greg Nicotero (“The Walking Dead”, Day of the Dead, “Breaking Bad”, Sin City). The creators, inspired by the film series of the same name created by George A. Romero and Stephen King. They also brought together incredible talent in their writers, directors and cast to revive the genre classic.

Each episode is a take on tales of horror, crime fiction, science fiction, and dark fantasy that were made popular by EC Comics in the ’40s and 50’s. The most notable being Tales from the Crypt, which also had a similar series on HBO.

The first episode is titled Mums, starring Ethan Embry (Empire Records, Sweet Home AlabamaMalone ThomasBraydon BensonErin Beute, and Lowry Brown. The story focuses on Jack, a young boy whose father is a domestic terrorist 3%er, plucked right from the news as of late.

When his mom, Bloom, attempts to leave with him, masking it as a sporadic road trip to visit family. The two are quickly confronted by her husband Hank, and she’s taken away in his truck in an apparent “citizen’s arrest”. Worried about her safety, Jack finds some seeds among his mom’s things, and to honor her and keep his mind off her absence, he plants them in her beloved garden.

Being watched over by family friend Beth, he begins to suspect that his mom isn’t returning home and has an idea of who is responsible. With a message from the garden herself, Jack sets up to avenge his mother and set things right.

Directed by Rusty Cundieff (Tales from the Hood, “Chappelle’s Show”), Mums is a fun, gory tale of redemption and revenge. The cast capture the vibe and eeriness that we’ve come to expect from the series. Ethan Embry plays against type as the abusive, alt-right husband and does a wonderful job in a role he just devoured.

With Queen Bee, the second tale in this week’s episode, we find ourselves with three teens obsessing over the pop sensation Regina. Discovering that their idol is due to deliver her baby at the local hospital, they devise a plan to sneak in and be the first of her fans to welcome the new bundle of joy. However, their excitement turns to terror when they make a discovery that will change the way the world sees their beloved artist.

Directed by Greg Nicotero himself, this portion staring Kaylynn HarrisHannah KeppleOlivia Hawthorne, and Nico Gomez delves more into the realm of science fiction than straight-up horror. With incredible special effects and creature design, and the staple animated background that fans of the movie and series have come to love.

Creepshow season 3 starts strong and gives the viewers a little taste of what to expect for the rest of the run. Tune in every Thursday for new episodes, exclusively on Shudder.
