‘Renfield’: Nicholas Hoult Cast in New Universal Monster Movie
Nicholas Hoult has been cast as everyone’s favorite familiar, Renfield. After the massive success of Leigh Whannell‘s The Invisible Man, Universal has been looking for new ways to bring their beloved monsters back to the big screen. Whannell is currently are working on a new version of The Wolfman starring Ryan Gosling.
Chris McKay, who just directed Amazon’s recently release, The Tomorrow War, will direct the project based on a story from The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman with a script written by Ryan Ridley. While the plot details are being kept under wraps, McKay recently told SYFY WIRE that Renfield is “a movie about co-dependency and it’s about bad bosses,” while also affirming that, “It’s definitely a horror-action movie, but it’s also obviously a comedy and it’s also gonna be a lot of fun.”

The character of Renfield first made his appearance in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula. Over the years the role has been played by Dwight Frye in 1931’s Dracula, Tom Waits in Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation, and by Peter MacNicol in Mel Brooks’ spoof Dracula: Dead and Loving It. In all renditions, Renfield is a deranged man with an obsession for eating insects and doing the bidding of his master, Count Dracula.
