“Overlook” Series Scrapped at HBO Max, Looking for New Home

HBO Max has decided to not proceed with Overlook, which was based on The Shining by Stephen King. The drama pilot was from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Prods. that was part of a deal with Warner Bros. according to Deadline. Now the series is trying to find a new home, word is that Netflix is considering the project, however, those are just rumors for now.

Overlook was part of a 2019 deal between Bad Robot and WarnerMedia, and was written by Dustin Thomason and Scott Brown (“Castle Rock”). The series was based on Stephen King’s fictional haunted hotel, The Overlook, and said to “explore the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction.”

This is just the latest Bad Robot content that HBO has decided not to move forward with. They recently decided not to proceed with a second season of the critically acclaimed “Lovecraft Country”, which won 18 Emmy Awards for its first season run. This also marks the forth time that Bat Robot and King have joined forces to tell new stories. They also collaborated on the Hulu based “Castle Rock” and “11.22.63”, as well as the limited series Lisey’s Story on Apple TV+.

A sequel to King’s The Shining, Doctor Sleep, was released last year and directed by Mike Flanagan, which is now streaming on HBO Max. Be sure to follow ScaryNerd and we will keep you updated as this story develops.
