Review: Netflix’s ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ Succeeds at Updating the Beloved Series

Unsolved Mysteries Reboot

Netflix

Over the weekend, viewers flocked to Netflix to relive their childhood with the premier of the updated Unsolved Mysteries. Many of us grew up on the original show hosted by the late Robert Stack.

The new version has many elements of the original and even features an updated rendition of the famous Unsolved Mysteries tune. The opening title card also pays homage to the late Robert Stack as a blurred ghost like silhouette can be seen. Netflix’s version plays like six mini documentaries and dedicates each episode to one case. Among them are tales of missing loved ones, fugitives on the run, and UFOs in Massachusetts.

The new series is able to update the show into a modern True Crime version of itself. Which is something that seems to resonate with today’s audiences profoundly. With this new format and focus, Unsolved Mysteries brings much more humanity to the show than before.

The show succeeds in taking viewers on a journey through timelines and facts. While still showcasing the aftermath and anguish many of the families had to go through. You really feel for many of the subjects on the show and it is difficult to not come to your own conclusions as to what has actually happened.

As a fan of the show for most of my life I’m glad to see its back, and hope it can continue for years to come. Hopefully they will continue to stick to the original types of cases as well. I want more Aliens, Sasquatches, as well as Missing Persons and Murders and more that made the original show great. Also, we are already desperately in need of update episode for the six stories!

I am excited to see more and hope Netflix is able to make a new six pack of episodes every month! But, no matter the frequency I will be watching, just as I did when I was a kid, in hopes of solving a case! What fan of Unsolved Mysteries doesn’t hope they hold the key to unlocking a mystery?
