Review: ‘LX 2048’ is a Sci-Fi Tragedy about the Modern Family

LX 2048

Director Guy Moshe’s new film LX 2048 opens today to select theaters. Starring James D’Arcy (Agent Carter, Avengers: Endgame), Anna Brewster (Versailles), and Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), and focuses on the not-so-distant future.

Synopsis: “It is 2048. Mankind has by now destroyed the ozone layer to such a degree that normal human beings cannot be out in daytime. People spend their waking hours at night and almost everything is done inside the virtual realm. From work to school to socializing, most people just stay home and conduct their affairs from their Virtual Reality designated spaces.

Mental depression has become so prevalent that the entire population is required to take the state issued pill 001LithiumX. In this new world order, Adam Bird is a rare breed. Adam insists on waking up during the day. He insists on leaving his house and going to work in a physical office. He has 3 kids in a time when most people barely breed, and he adamantly refuses to take 001LithiumX, fighting to stay human in a world that is rapidly transforming into the artificial.”

James D’Arcy plays Adam Bird a man who feels the new world has changed humans and human connection. While he grapples with his own feelings of loneliness, mortality and the fate of his family, he must decide which path to choose. It’s easy to relate to his inadequacies, indulgences and his own inner struggle.

LX 2048 has a lot of Sci-fi attributes including, cloning, virtual reality, and moral questions about advancing technology. However, the story is much more about humans interaction with technology and the conflicts it creates within our lives. As Adam struggles to stay connected and in the sunlight, he ends up pulling away from the real humans, his family, that loves him. Thus, the film is a timely exploration of human disconnection in the digital age. But also a self indulgent tragedy on the misery of the modern human condition.

As Adam struggles with his own thoughts of an unsatisfied life, he realizes how his own complacency and selfishness may actually be the problem. Its not until he’s literally staring into the face of himself that he realizes what he needs. LX 2048 is a timely tale that explores the effects of the digital world on society, and humans. The film has lots to say about the way in which humans use, live and communicate within the realm of the digital world. Even though it’s set in the future, many of the issues surrounding the character are reflected in our current pandemic situation.

More over this film succeeds in making an impression on its viewers. While I feel the sci-fi elements could have been taken to new heights, the human story is a relatable one. As we continue to grow our lives online, we will eventually will face our own moral issues. Issues that will impact our real life and the human connections we have.

LX 2048 will be available to rent or own September 25th on Amazon, iTunes, Comcast, Spectrum, Dish, DirecTV, Vudu and more in the US and Canada. You can check out the trailer below and as always be sure to follow ScaryNerd for more of all things horror.
