Jordan Peele Producing New Take on Craven Classic ‘The People Under the Stairs’ at Universal

The People Under the Stairs

The People Under the Stairs was a horror film layered around social issues of the 90s. Today Collider learned that Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld will produce a new take on the original via their Monkeypaw Productions banners. No word of yet if they will help pen the script like they did with Nia Dacosta‘s Candyman

Wes Craven directed the 1991 horror film, starred Brandon AdamsEverett McGillWendy RobieA.J. Langer and Ving Rhames. The film is also celebrating it’s 29th anniversary on Nov. 1.

The original film followed Fool, a young boy who gets roped into robbing a house with two adult thieves. After discovering that this house holds more than riches, they become trapped and have to fight their way out. But they soon realize that breaking in was easy, breaking out may cost them their lives.

The People Under the Stairs, like many of Wes Craven’s films is loaded with social commentary about racial and economic inequality. Which will be a great fit with Peele and his style to bring these issues to audiences in new and creepy ways.

The People Under the Stairs will mark the first Wes Craven film, since his death to be remade. Craven died in 2015 and many have been nervous to touch his projects. But now that Scream is in the hands of Radio Silence, this may just be the beginning for new takes on the horror director’s films.
