Fantasia Film Festival 2021: 5 Films We’re Excited to See
The 2021 Fantasia Film Festival is kicking off in just a few days! The festival is known for giving support to the unusual and genre films, and this year will end with Takashi Miike‘s (Audition) new fantasy sequel The Great Yokai War: Guardians. There are plenty of features and short films to satisfy every blood thirsty horror fan. Here are ScaryNerd’s most anticipated horror films of Fantasia Film Festival 2021.
The Deep House
The Deep House follows two Youtuber’s who are looking to find an abandoned, unique place for their latest video. The two meet a man who knows the location of an underwater house, that can only be accessed through a forest that doesn’t have a name, and isn’t on any map. Sure that seems safe.
After a number of “ do not enter” signs and random religious artifacts hanging on the gate, the two swim through an opening into a mysterious house with a sinister past. While live on social media, they discover that this house maybe completely submerged but that hasn’t stopped the spirits from residing within. Starring Camille Rowe and James Jagger, The Deep House will premiere at Fantasia Film Festival on August 22.
The Feast
We first told you about The Feast after IFCMidnight bought the north American rights. This eco-horror is set in the Welsh countryside in a “surrealist-sleek household.” A politician’s family are settling in for an extravagant dinner to secure a lucrative mining deal for the surrounding forest. A new hire (HIDDEN’s Annes Elwy) is brought into the home when the household’s regular help is unable to be there.
She begins to quietly observe with an eerie, almost anthropological interest. The dinner begins as the family tries to win the contract. “Centuries-old lifeforces in said forestry, however, may have other plans on what exactly is to be served.” The Feast stars Annes Elwy, Nia Roberts, Julian Lewis Jones, Sion Alun Davies, Steffan Cennydd, Rhodri Meilir and Lisa Palfrey. The film will premiere at Fantasia Film Festival on August 16, 2021.
The Night House
After the suicide death of her husband, schoolteacher Beth (Rebecca Hall of GODZILLA VS. KONG) is left reeling in a remote lakeside home he built for them. Beth becomes haunted by nightmares and disturbing visions of something in her home. She decides to go through her husbands belongings in hopes of finding answers about the strange things happening around her.
Including the “night house,” which appears and disappears across the lake each night. The secrets Beth discovers are both bizarre and frightening, but she is determined to find answers. Check out the trailer above and The Night House directed by David Bruckner premieres at Fantasia August 12th.
Prisoners of the Ghostland
Prisoners of the Ghostland stars Nicolas Cage and Nick Cassavettes as two gun-toting American bank robbers, in Samurai Town. Meanwhile, Bernice (Sofia Boutella) the granddaughter of the town’s tyrannical ruler, The Governor (Bill Moseley), is attempting to escape.
When she becomes trapped in the dangerous The Ghostland, Hero (Cage) is tasked with finding her alive and “unsoiled”, in three days. Something tells me things will surely go awry for the rescue mission. Prisoners of the Ghostland will premiere at the festival on Friday, August 20th.
What Josiah Saw
“Everyone in town knows about the haunted Graham Farm on Willow Road. You’ll hear there’s a bad history to it. Josiah and his youngest son, Thomas, are all that remain of this estranged family. But after experiencing terrifying visions from beyond, Josiah decides they must change their ways to right a great wrong.
After being away for over two decades, Eli and Mary, Josiah’s eldest children, are enticed to sell the property and reunite at the old farmhouse in hopes of closing this haunting chapter of their lives. Soon, sins of the past will be paid for.” What Josiah Saw stars Robert Patrick, Nick Stahl, Scott Haze, Kelli Garner and Tony Hale. The film will premiere on August 20th, 2021.
Fantasia Film Festival kicks off August 5 and runs util the August 25th. Stay tuned for more as ScaryNerd will be covering the 2021 lineup. As always be sure to follow ScaryNerd for more of all things horror, sci-fi and more.
