‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Billed as First Horror Film of MCU
The announcement of the return of the Blade franchise isn’t the only exciting thing happening in the MCU. As fans had expected, Marvel’s Phase 4 included a new sequel to the Doctor Strange timeline starring Benedict Cumberbatch. However, it wasn’t expected that the sequel would be taking on a darker tone. During Marvel’s panel at San Diego’s Comic-Con, it was revealed that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be a horror film. Director Scott Derrickson said they will take stories from the original comics and playing up “the gothic, the horror.” Derrickson is no stranger to the horror genre. He has directed several horror films including The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister.

The first Doctor Strange film told the origin story of Cumberbatch’s superhero. Who plays an arrogant doctor drawn to the world of mystic arts after an accident. He finds himself under the tutelage of The Ancient One played by Tilda Swinton. After completing his training and becoming Sorcerer Supreme he must battle dark forces from our world and other realms. The 2016 film also starred Benedict Wong, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Cumberbatch’s character also appeared in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War and, after Hulk’s unsnap, Avengers: Endgame.
Scarlet Witch Will Join Doctor Strange
Furthermore, Derrickson also explained that he will lead Cumberbatch to dark and damaging places. Along the way he will have the company of Elizabeth Olsen, who will reprise her role as Scarlet Witch. Her Disney Plus series “Wandavision” will lead her to Strange’s doorstep, according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
