Thats right, Deputy Dewey, a.k.a. David Arquette, will report back once again to take on the iconic Ghostface killer in Scream 5. Arquette has portrayed the character since the first installment in the Scream franchise that began in 1996.
All of the franchise films, up until now were directed by creator and horror icon, Wes Craven. Many of the film co-stars were weary of continuing the franchise without Craven. However, In a recent interview Scream heroine and all around badass, Neve Campbell said she was “having conversations” with the new filmmakers. Stating that “the directors have come to me with such a great appreciation for Wes’ work and they really want to honor it and that meant a lot to me and hopefully we’ll be able to do it”.

“I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new,” said David Arquette in a statement. “Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.” Arquette is the first member of the film’s ensemble to be officially announced and first original member to join the new film.
The film will be an original story co-written by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not). The filmmaking group Radio Silence will be spearheading the film with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directing. The third member of the filmmaking group, Chad Villella, will executive produce along with Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original Scream.
“I’m excited to reteam with David and work with Jamie, Guy and Radio Silence on the next Scream,” said Williamson in a statement. “Their take on the movie is both original, inventive and honors Wes’ legacy in a wonderful way. Ready or Not was my favorite horror film of last year and I can’t wait to see what their amazing talents bring to the Scream universe. I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”
