Cuban Horror ‘Is That You’ Grabbed By US Indie Distributor

Breaking Glass has officially nabbed a film by the Cuban filmmaker Rudy Riverón Sánchez, entitled, “Is That You?” (“Eres tu, Papa”). Which has been labeled as the first psychological horror film to be made in Cuba.

The film tells the story of 13-year-old Lili, who lives in a shack in the Cuban countryside with her mother and despotic father. After her father vanishes, Lili decides to do a ritual taught to her by a medium to bring him back. Consequently, the ritual leads her to discover the disturbing truth behind his disappearance.

“I had an idea for a horror film that told the story of a young girl in conflict with her family and I wanted it to be distinctive; that’s how Is That You? came about,” the film’s director, Rudy Riverón Sánchez, told Variety.

The Philadelphia-based indie distributor’s CEO Rich Wolf stated that: “we are excited to bring a major talent like Riverón to North American audiences.” Then added, “he is a fantastic director and ‘Is That You?’ just draws you in; it’s truly impossible to turn away from what’s happening on the screen.”

Journey to the States

The film began its festival debut at the Oldenburg International Film Festival. Then, later premiered in the U.S. at the San Francisco Independent Film Festival. The deal, was negotiated by Breaking Glass’s Wolff and executive producer Rebecca Randell in February. As a result, ‘Is that You?’ will open theatrically in Los Angeles in June, followed by a DVD and VOD release.

According to Variety, Breaking Glass has released a range of indie movies in a variety of genres and languages. Its Spanish-language lineup includes notable Latin American films as “We Are Three,” “Guilty Men,” “Jesus,” “La Granja,” “Esteros,” “Santa & Andres,” “The Long Night of Francisco Sanctis” and “Xingu.”
