‘Gremlins 3’: Chris Columbus Still Really Wants to Make Sequel and Even Wrote a Script

Gremlins 3 has been a project that Chris Columbus, who wrote the first film, has been teasing since 2017. However things went quiet in 2019, when Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the Gremlins name and franchise. Shortly after, Warner Bros. greenlit Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, an animated TV series headed to HBO Max.

The franchise was born when the script was discovered by Steven Spielberg. After he boarded as producer and Joe Dante as director, they brought the Christmasy, creature feature to life. The 1984 film grew a huge fan base and made everyone fall in love with the heroic Mogwai, Gizmo. Dante returned for the 1990 sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch, but that seemed to be the end of the franchise. Until Columbus revealed he was still hoping to bring fans another sequel.

Recently, Columbus spoke with Collider for his new Netflix film The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two. During the interview he gave an update on the future of Gremlins 3:

“I would love to do it. I wrote a script, so there is an existing script. We’re working out some rights issues right now, so we’re just trying to figure out when the best time to make that film would be. I would still do it the same way – I would do it as tangible puppets, not CGI. Maybe having — you know we had one stop-motion scene in the first Gremlins, but I don’t think I’d use much CGI in Gremlins 3.

Ultimately, we will have to wait and see if a studio will back the production. But hopefully the HBO Max series will lend a hand to bringing back our favorite little Mogwai.
