Channing Tatum isn’t widely known for his thriller roles, but he is looking to change that with his next project. The actor will teaming up with his 21 Jump Street directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller for a new “modern day, tongue in cheek thriller” at Universal, inspired by the studio’s classic monster movies according to sources at EW.

Lord, Miller and Tatum are all set to produce alongside writer-producer Reid Carolin. Carolin came up with the original idea for the project and handed it to Wes Tooke (Midway), who will pen the script.

A press release describes the film as “a bold genre reinvention of one of the studio’s most beloved characters from the Monsters Universe,” in the vein of this year’s The Invisible Man with Elisabeth Moss. However, they are keeping fans in suspense for which classic monster they will tackle.

Universal has recently made a push to bring more classic monsters back to the big screen after The Invisible Man opened to wide spread success. While they haven’t officially relaunched the “Dark Universe”, we will see Universal monsters in the future. The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell, is currently slated to bring back the Wolfman with Ryan Gosling.

Channing Tatum is currently in production for his directorial debut Dog, which he also stars in. Lord and Miller, have a number of projects upcoming, including the Into the Spider-Verse sequel. So no word of when production will begin for this new film.

Unfortunately those are all the details we have for now. But be sure to follow ScaryNerd for more of all things horror. Sound off in the comments: What classic Universal Monster do you think Channing Tatum can take on?
