Back in February, we reported that the Gremlins universe was expanding. Now, with the age of 80s nostalgia upon us, it is finally official! On Monday, WarnerMedia announced that an animated series has been ordered to its upcoming streaming service. Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will include 10 half-hour episodes. The series will center around a 10-year-old Sam Wing, the shop owner in original 1984 film. The show will give fans a deeper look into the Mogwai’s mythology. It will also explore how young Gizmo met the young Sam Wing in 1920s Shanghai.
Joining Sam and Gizmo along the way is a teen street thief named Elle. Together they go on a journey along the Chinese countryside. And come face to face with colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their journey to return Gizmo to his family and find a legendary treasure, an evil industrialist and his army of Gremlins pursue them.
The original film, Gremlins, was first released in 1984 starring Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates. Written by Chris Columbus and directed by Joe Dante the film went on to become a major box-office hit. Dante returned to the universe to direct the 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. The series will mark the official return to the Gremlins timeline since then.
Amblin Television and Warner Bros. Animation are producing the series. Tze Chun (Gotham) will write the show and serve as co-executive producer with Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, and Sam Register. There is currently no release date for the series. So be sure to follow ScaryNerd and we’ll keep you up to date on all things horror!
