Animated Gremlins Are Coming to Take Over Your Televisions
Quick, turn on all the lights, check all the closets and cupboards, look under all the beds! Because sources for Variety have learned of an animated ‘Gremlins’ series in the works! The series will reportedly be on the new streaming platform, coming soon from WarnerMedia.
Though, Warner Bros. and Amblin both declined to comment on the project. The series is said to center on Mr. Wing, the Chinese grandfather originally portrayed by Keye Luke. We will follow Mr. Wing as a young man with his friendly Mogwai Gizmo, as they go on adventures. As with the ‘Gremlins’ films, the series will be produced by Warner Bros. Television and Amblin Television.
Helming the series is Tze Chun, who is set to write and executive produce. Chun has many writing credit under his belt, including 2013’s “Cold Comes the Night” starring Bryan Cranston. He has also written many episodes of “Gotham” and “Once Upon a Time.”
The streaming service is set to launch sometime in 2019. However, the platform is not expected to get original content until 2020. For the launch of their “beta” version, they will feature films and shows from their archives. Last October, WarnerMedia unveiled plans for the service, and then later announced the three pricing tiers.
The announcement of a ‘Gremlins’ series comes at a time when 80s nostalgia projects, and reboots are all the rage for studios. Many reboots, continuations, and remakes from horror of the 80s has been gracing both big and small screens since the early 2000s. While fans of the original films were hoping for the ‘Gremlins 3’, that never left the development stage. We have to wonder if everything needs to be made new again. Or if fans will enjoy seeing their favorite Mogwai as a cartoon.
