New Horror/Adventure ‘Casper’ Series in the Works at Peacock

A new live-action “Casper” series is reportedly in development at Peacock. Sources at Deadline say the potential series comes from Kai Yu Wu (“The Ghost Bride”), who will also executive produce alongside UCP and DreamWorks Animation.

The new series said to be a horror/adventure show that reimagines the origin of the friendliest ghost in a coming-of-age story that explores what it means to be alive. When a new family arrives in the small town of Eternal Falls, Casper finds himself entangled in a mystery uncovering dark secrets that have been buried for over 100 years.

The character of Casper was introduced in the 1940s by Famous Studios and was later acquired by Harvey Comics, which has published the comics since 1952. Over the years there have been numerous comic books, animated series and films. Deadline notes that “in 2001, Harvey Entertainment was acquired by Classic Media. In 2012, Classic Media was bought by DreamWorks Animation, which in turn was acquired by Universal Pictures parent NBCUniversal in 2016.”

The first live-action movie was released in 1995 (pictured above), and featured the voice talents of Malachi Pearson. The film also starred Christina Ricci, Bill Pullman, Cathy Moriarty, Eric Idle and Devon Sawa playing the human version of the ghost. The film was a worldwide hit grossing over $287 million at the box office with a reported budget of $55 million.
