Upcoming Horror Movies, Hopefully, Coming Out in Summer 2021
Summer 2021 is beginning to look bright for Horror Movies. While 2020 saw a year of films being delayed, pushed back or canceled all together, 2021 seems to be getting back to normal slowly. Now with theaters opening, increasing vaccination rates and even studios shifting to VOD premieres films are coming back.
While it seems things with the virus are still touch and go, studios and filmmakers are ready to entertain again. So here’s a list of all the horror movies scheduled to be release this summer, 2021.
1. Spiral: From The Book Of Saw (May 14)
The Saw franchise returns for its ninth installment, this time with help from Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock. From director Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV), Spiral follows Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks and his partner when they are assigned to investigate into grisly murders that seem to be connected to the city’s gruesome past and a dead serial killer. However as the investigation continues, Zeke finds himself part of the killer’s morbid game. Spiral: From the Book of Saw comes to theaters May 14th.
2. Army of the Dead (May 21)
Directed by Zach Snyder, Army of the Dead follows Dave Bautista who leads a team into the zombie-decimated Las Vegas to break into an untapped casino vault. However, after arriving on the Vegas strip the team realizes there is something different about this hoard of undead. These zombies are organized, fast and apparently can fight. Joining Bautista in the film is Omari Hardwick, Hiroyuki Sanada, Garret Dillahunt, Raúl Castillo, Nora Arnezeder, Matthias Schweighöfer, Samantha Win, Tig Notaro and Rich Cetrone. Army of the Dead will stream only on Netflix May 21, 2021.
3. A Quiet Place Part II (May 28)
A Quiet Place Part II was one of the first to pull it’s release date in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Now the release date is set for the highly anticipated release of the follow-up sequel. After the events of the first film, the the Abbott family, venture into the outside world of their home. While evading the monsters that now inhabit the wilderness they meet up with other survivors who have adapted to life without sound. Peaky Blinders’s Cillian Murphy joins the cast when this film hits theaters May 28, 2021.
4. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (June 4)
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It will focus on the real-life case of Arne Cheyenne Jackson who was the first case to use demonic possession as a defense against a manslaughter prosecution. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It features the return of stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, with Ruairi O’Connor, Sarah Catherine Hook, and Julian Hilliard starring alongside them. The third installment in The Conjuring franchise heads to theaters and HBO Max June 4, 2021.
5. Werewolves Within (June 25, July 2)
The horror/comedy Werewolves Within was directed by Josh Ruben and based on the video game of the same name from Red Storm Entertainment. Newly arrived ranger Finn (Sam Richardson) is trapped when a snowstorm settles over his new town and cuts him and the townsfolk off from civilization. He and local postal worker, Cecily (Milana Vayntrub), must work together when a creature begins picking off the towns people one at a time.
Werewolves Within stars Sam Richardson (Promising Young Woman), Harvey Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows“), Milana Vayntrub, Michaela Watkins, Catherine Curtin(“Stranger Things“), Cheyenne Jackson (“Watchman“), George Basil and Sarah Burns(“Barry“). Werewolves Within will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June, followed by a limited release on June 25, before hitting video on demand on July 2.
6. The Forever Purge (July 2)
The Forever Purge is said to be the end to The Purge franchise. Set as direct sequel to The Purge: Election Year, which sees a new leader take over the US and finally end Purge Night once and for all. At the close of Election Year, it was clear that many were not happy with their Purge rights taken away. Adela (Ana de la Reguera) and Juan (Tenoch Huerta) become stranded on Texas ranch when the local citizens decide Purge Night isn’t ending this year. The Forever Purge comes to theaters this July 2, 2021.
7. Escape Room 2 (July 14)
While not much is known about the follow up to the first film, Escape Room 2 was directed by Adam Robitel with a screenplay by Will Honley and Maria Melnik & Daniel Tuch. Neal H. Returning cast Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, join newcomers Indya Moore, Holland Roden, Isabelle Fuhrman, Carlito Olivero, Thomas Cocquerel and with James Frain. Escape Room 2 is currently set to hit theaters July 14, 2021.
8. The Night House (July 16)
The Night House is a psychological horror movie that follows Beth (Rebecca Hall) after the unexpected death of her husband. While living alone in a house her husband built, Beth starts having visions of a presence in the house calling to her. Attempting to find answers she begins to dig into her husband’s belongings. But what she finds only leads her deeper into strange and terrible secrets.
9. Old (July 23)
M. Night Shyamalan’s newest supernatural psychological fantasy horror thriller, Old, arrives this July. Inspired by the graphic novel by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters’ Sandcastle. The film follows a family who on a tropical holiday begin rapidly aging when they find themselves on secluded beach. Soon they realize that their lives will blink by in a single day if they don’t figure out the mysterious nature of the beach. Starring are Gael García Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung, Alex Wolff, Embeth Davidtz, Thomasin McKenzie, and Eliza Scanlen. Old will premiere only in theaters this July 23, 2021.
10. Don’t Breathe 2 (August 13)
Director Fede Álvarez returns for part two of a story that audiences flocked to in 2016. This sequel sees the visually impaired, but also a complete badass man, now living in a cabin in the woods, after he was taken in by a young orphan girl. Why? We don’t know. But when the girl is kidnapped, he must leave the house to try to save her. Based on the first installment, the Don’t Breathe Sequel will likely focus on The Blind Man’s past and the present danger he now encounters.
11. Demonic (August 20)
The film Demonic is a supernatural chiller that was written and directed by Neill Blomkamp. A young woman begins unleashing terrifying demons, after details of a decades-old rift between mother and daughter are ruthlessly revealed. Demonic will come to theaters initially, before heading to on-demand and digital a week later.
12. Candyman (August 27)
Fans have been waiting a long time to see director Nia DaCosta, spiritual sequel to the 1992 film Candyman. The follow up stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, Watchmen)and expands on the story of the original, taking us back to Cabrini-Green in Chicago. The new film will likely also feature a refresh on the themes of gentrification and race, Candyman is one of the most anticipated releases of the year, coming to theaters this August.
