‘The Stand’: Director Josh Boone Explains Those Marilyn Manson Rumors

Josh Boone is one of the directors that has taken on the newest adaptation of the Stephen King epic The Stand. When production began there were a number of rumors swirling around actor/musician Marilyn Manson. Now Boone, who directed the premiere and finale, is looking to quell all the rumors and questions surrounding the shock rocker.

The rumor began when Manson, himself said he was working on a new song and would appear in the series. Many fans were hopeful that he would take the role of the pyromaniac Trashcan Man. However, it was revealed last week that Ezra Miller was cast for the role. Boone did reveal that he wanted Manson for another role, The Kid. The Kid was a storyline that was added into the extended version of King’s novel. The Kid is a psychopath that runs into Trashcan Man and gives him a lift to Las Vegas. But, just like the original, The Kid, didn’t make the cut.

“Just to clarify, Marilyn Manson and I had long-discussed him taking on the role of The Kid in The Stand,” said director Josh Boone in an email to EW. “He and the great Shooter Jennings even recorded a killer cover of The Doors song, ‘The End,’ that ultimately proved too expensive to use. The show was made on a very tight budget and some of the dreams we had went to the wayside. The Kid was another casualty. When Manson wasn’t able to make it work schedule-wise, the storyline was ultimately excised and never shot, which is for the best, as no one could have slayed that role like Manson would have. Hope to work with him in the future.”

“We thought we were going to be able to restore the character of The Kid, but there really isn’t a lot of reason for The Kid to exist,” showrunner Benjamin Cavell previously told EW. In the series, a super flu takes out 99.4 percent of humanity, leaving survivors scattered across the United States. The survivors must choose to head to a Boulder-based group led by the Mother Abagail (Whoopi Goldberg) or to head south to Vegas to be led by Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard).

The Stand cast is packed full with talent, including James Marsden, Odessa Young, Jovan Adepo, Amber Heard, Owen Teague, Henry Zaga, Brad William Henke, Irene Bedard. Also starring are Nat Wolff, Eion Bailey, Heather Graham, Katherine McNamara, Fiona Dourif, Natalie Martinez, Hamish Linklater, Daniel Sunjata, and Greg Kinnear.
